A number of years ago, shortly after we moved provinces here in Canada because I was transferring schools, we found out that we were not going to be receiving any financial assistance from the provincial government as we had been led to believe. Rather our only assistance would come from the federal government (which amounted to roughly $5000 for 12 months).

Even with me working part-time, we came very far from making ends meet, and I was starting to feel the burden of not being able to support my family. Four months after I started school, we had a baby. There were many times we had to choose between buying diapers and buying food.

I was praying at least five times a day and fasting every Sunday for relief from our situation. Days went by, weeks went by, and even months went by before I started to wonder if my prayers were being heard. Creditors were constantly harassing us, and we had no money to pay them. It made things worse. And to top it all off, I hadn’t felt the Spirit since I had been released as EQP a few months before our move…or so I thought anyhow.

My prayers were starting to become less and less like pleas of help and more and more like “where are you” pleas.

My wife and I were attending an Institute class Tuesday nights and it helped quite a bit. We had a very good teacher (I actually work with him in the Stake Mission Presidency now).

One lesson was being given on the trials of the early Saints in the 19th century. And we read from D&C 121, I noticed in the beginning of the chapter that Joseph Smith was asking the very same questions I had. And of a sudden, I was reminded of Matthew 27, when Christ asks the same questions on the cross.

My perspective changed then, realising what happened despite the questions these two great men, who together had done more for the salvation of this world than any other had. I figured if they could get through it all, then surely I could, too.

Our financial situation didn’t change immediately, but how I viewed our situation sure did.
