{"id":3168,"date":"2016-02-18T22:18:35","date_gmt":"2016-02-19T05:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ourthoughts.ca\/?p=3168"},"modified":"2016-02-18T22:18:35","modified_gmt":"2016-02-19T05:18:35","slug":"cutting-your-nose-to-spite-your-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ourthoughts.ca\/2016\/02\/18\/cutting-your-nose-to-spite-your-face\/","title":{"rendered":"Cutting Your Nose to Spite Your Face"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Cutting off the nose to spite the face&#8221; is an expression used to describe a needlessly self-destructive over-reaction to a problem.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/kutv.com\/news\/local\/lds-church-says-hate-crimes-bill-would-alter-balance-of-religious-liberty-lgbt-rights\">a report by KUTV<\/a>, The Church has issued a statement responding to a bill on Utah&#8217;s Capitol Hill that would toughen penalties for hate crimes against &#8220;ancestry, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, national origin, race, religion, or sexual orientation&#8221;. The church doesn&#8217;t want it to pass because it thinks it shifts the balance too far away from religious liberties in favour of gays:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The Utah Legislature achieved something extraordinary last year in arriving at legislation that protected both religious liberty rights and LGBT rights,&#8221; said church spokesman Dale Jones in a statement Wednesday afternoon which was released in response to media inquiries. &#8220;Interests from both ends of the political spectrum are attempting to alter that balance. We believe that the careful balance achieved through being fair to all should be maintained.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m trying not to have a knee-jerk reaction here, but the article points out that according to the Utah Department of Public Safety, <a href=\"http:\/\/bci.utah.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/02\/2014-Crime-in-UtahFinal.pdf\">the rates of reported hate crimes<\/a> are staggeringly more likely to be based on religious intolerance rather than homophobic bigotry. I&#8217;d say this is a clear case of cutting off the nose to spite the face.
