New counsellor: Henry B. Eyring
Woo hoo! He’s my favourite apostle.
New apostle: Quentin L. Cook
Elder Cook is the 95th apostle called in the 177 years of the Church’s existence.
Elder Charles Didier was released from the presidency of the Seventy. He was the apostle who created the Mesquite Nevada Stake when I was serving there.
Eyring isn’t my favorite, but he’s the one I was predicting.
Oh really? I didn’t predict anyone.
That’s because you aren’t as awesome as me.
True dat.
Elder Packer talked about how each of us is entitled to revelation for our callings. I wonder though whether some revelations supersede others. Can a bishop receive revelation for his ward’s Primary? If so, does that revelation supersede any received by the Primary president?
I wonder how all those couples President Packer mentioned by name felt hearing their name mention during conference.
Re: Elder Condie’s talk
I wonder what Abraham and Sarah thought having one child when the Lord told them a great nation would come from them. It is amazing to think how one child could end up in so many descendants.
Does Elder Uchtdorf read Our Thoughts? It seems his talk ties into my Prophesying Calamities post.
Elder Uchtdorf:
I wonder how many people will interpret that to mean the church has all light and truth. If the church did, then there would be no need for continuing revelation.
I like the “Where Can I Turn For Peace” hymn. It makes me think of a lot of the experiences I have had. It seems to tie into many of this morning’s talks.
Brother Longhurst, choir organist for the last 30 years, is retiring this year.
I wonder if President Hinckley will hit 100 before he dies.
Elder Ballard:
4 things to understand the church:
Elder Ballard said Mormons come from all walks of life.
I guess that means we’re not all Conservative/Republican after all.
Practising Mormons (attend church & temple regularly):
Never hesitate to bear your testimony with sincerity and love.
Elder Wirthlin:
He goes on to say it is love.
Do we really love others to the point that it is our best defining quality? I can’t say with conviction that I feel loved by my fellow ward members.
Wirthlin: gospel of Jesus Christ is a gospel of transformation.
Despite sounding (I was able to only listen to this session) like he was about to pass out, Elder Wirthlin gave a good talk. I’ve been thinking more lately about how I need to develop more love for my quorum members. This talk comes at an opportune time for me.
Bruce D Porter: Atonement takes effect when we are submissive.
Broken heart includes deep gratitude for Jesus’s suffering.
Elders Falabella, Kopischke and Teh were all called to the First Quorum of the Seventy last conference, and they all spoke today. I wonder if Elder Octaviano Tenorio and Elder Claudio D. Zivic (also called in April) will speak this weekend.
Keith I. Hilbig: Do I visit the mall on a free day instead of attending the temple? Do I watch TV or surf the Internet instead of providing service. Do I read the newspaper religiously (no pun intended I suppose), but read the scripture infrequently?
Elder Hilbig:
It seems then that the Lord will not initiate this growing closer. Initiation lies with us.
Elder Holland’s talk reminds me of part of our Gospel Doctrine class this past Sunday. Someone read a comment by a Christian minister who stated that we are not Christian because we do not believe in traditional Christianity.
It is true we do not accept traditional Christianity. Our church was not founded on Christian traditions. I suppose that is what sets our church apart from many other Christian churches. Our is based on biblical Christianity, and theirs is based on traditional Christianity.
Elder Holland: First century saints must not be Christian then, since they did not accept the creeds of centuries later. This being despite the fact that many of them even saw Jesus.
Elder Holland: The day of the First Vision marked the beginning of the return of the New Testament gospel.
Elder Nelson is the concluding speaker. I guess President Hinckely isn’t speaking today. Well, he will probably speak tonight.
Elder Nelson: Divine doctrine is confirmed by more than one scriptural witness. Scriptural witness authenticate each other.
I’ve enjoyed this afternoon’s session. I look forward to reading the talks when they come out.
I am sooooo thrilled Elder Eyring got called. Like Kim, he is by far my favorite apostle.. well ok maybe not so much as an apostle but my favorite speaker!!!! Definitely will be sitting up and paying attention now at G.C. :)
We could NOT get this morning’s conference on the computer! Then missed the afternoon session as had to go to a funeral :( Thanks Kim for taking notes for me.
Let’s not get into Elder Packer’s revelation comment… I would certainly be using his logic next time a Bp told me my revelations about who to call where had to take 2nd fiddle to his.
As for Abraham and Sara’s one child having so many descendants…. That one child did not have any more then any other one child. Unless the one child had no children of course.
“Bruce D Porter: Atonement takes effect when we are submissive.” Oh brother… guess that leaves me out
“Keith I. Hilbig: Do I visit the mall on a free day instead of attending the temple? Do I watch TV or surf the Internet instead of providing service. Do I read the newspaper religiously (no pun intended I suppose), but read the scripture infrequently?” Where is the fun in that????

Some thoughts from priesthood session:
Related to David & Bathsheba, David should have shown modesty by looking away from Bathsheba. I found this interesting because it shows that one must take responsibility for his thoughts and desires and that modesty is more than just how you appear to others.
Church service is preparatory for helping in devastation.
Pray about the people you have been called to serve. I found this interesting since I have been trying to pray about improving myself to help those whom I serve.
To help when you are called to serve in a calling:
Sounded like Elder Kerr was praying for the protesters.
I find it interesting that President Eyring says it is easy for us to forget God in hard times. I would think it is easy for us to forget him during good times. I would think that good times would prompt us to call out to God.
Apparently Elder Cook was called as an apostle this past Thursday. I wonder if he had been assigned previously as a 70 to speak this conference. If not, that’s not much time to write a 12 minute talk. Especially for conference.
Elder Cook: 25% of Pacific Islanders are Mormon.
Elder Bednar:
Pattern outlined by the Saviour in the scriptures
Elder Bednar: Our covenant responsibility is to change our hearts so we have no desire but to do good continually. We must overcome sin and the desire to sin.
Baptism is only one part of what it means to be born again.
Elder Bednar: Regarding spiritual perfection is unattainable, but we should press forward nonetheless.
Elder Bednar: Spiritual perfection does not come through sporadic spurts of intense spiritual activity. We should make small, steady, incremental spiritual improvements.
Elder Bednar: Repent with sincerity of heart.
I guess Elders Tenorio and Zivic spoke after all. Interesting.
Elder Tenorio is a hoot. He spake at our last Stake Conference.
Can anyone explain what happened after Pres Hinkley’s talk at Priesthood session? There seemed to be someone talking over the microphone but it was muffled on the broadcast. The organ player seemed to be overplaying the introduction whilst he was checking out what was happenening.
Tibson-
I was in the Conf Center. President Monson just got up and announced the closing hymn and benediction again. I’m guessing he just forgot that he’d already done so.
