Marriage and Last Names

I found a way to incorporate our polls into a post, so I am creating this post for our current poll. Now not only can you vote, but you can comment, too. This also makes the archives public.

  1. I was one of the “It doesn’t matter” voters. I took my husband’s last name, for a few reasons, I wanted a new last name and well, I just wanted to.

My sister kept her maiden name, and I dont’ see anything wrong with that, it’s an individual choice and I think that’s what is important. It is up to the husband and wife what they decide, most importantly, it is up to the woman what she would like to do, keep it, hyphenate it or use one or the other whenever she wants.

  2. “most importantly, it is up to the woman what she would like to do”

If she wants her husband to take her surname and he does not want to, what she wants is more important?

  3. no…oh sorry, I thought it was still the original question about a woman taking her husband’s surname. But I think it is equal for both. I have a friend who took her husband’s name and he took hers. They joined them.

  4. The question was never just about women taking men’s names. It was just about surnames in general with the different options listed in the poll.

  5. What about the kids– whose surname should they take if their parents have different surnames? ;)

In Korea, the wife does not take on the husband’s surname, but the children do take on their father’s surname.

Could get confusing if each of the kids chose a different parent’s surname as their own… maybe not too bad. We just wouldn’t have the convenience of calling them the “Kim” family or the “Oh” family :)

  6. “What about the kids– whose surname should they take if their parents have different surnames?”

Generally they take the father’s name (my nephews have their father’s last name) but sometimes a combination of parents’ names is what they use.

  7. …or just have them pick their own names when they get older. :P

“Hello, these are my kids Barney and Princess Fiona”

  8. rick– ever see the movie Big Daddy? He lets the kid he “adopts” choose his own name… Frankenstein. Awesome!
