Global Footprint

I have a global footprint of 4.1 global hectares acres (half of which is tied up in the producing the food I eat). Apparently, the Canadian average is 8.8. At the same time, supposedly the world can only support 1.8 hectares per person. If everyone lived like me, we would need 2.5 planets.

How did you do?

I think the commute and food killed me. I also believe that that quiz is biased against the rural population, but perhaps I am in error.

  2. There were a couple of things I didn’t agree with. For example, the question about electricty was only an either or when it came to efficiency. There was no partly. While we have a 40 year old furnace, we do use fluorescent bulbs in all our fixtures. I also don’t think that eating meat once per week is often. I mean, that’s only 4.7% of one’s meals.

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 8.8 GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.

WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 1.8 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.

IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 4.8 PLANETS.

I got hit by the amount of people that live here I think although it might be that I couldnt figure out the litres per 100 kilometers question. I still work on how many miles per gallon our Jeep does :(

Kim how did you get away with half the number that Rick and I have?

  4. Beats me. I had more food than you, but less than Rick. Shelter and services were also both under 1.

It probably helps that I have more people per hectare in my house than the two of you do.

Convert mpg to L/100km, Google is your friend

  5. Malthusian nonsense. Someone should have told Malthus the stone age didn’t end because the world ran out of stones.

  6. This is mine:

    It’s ’cause I’m a vegetarian (well maybe)

  7. How are these figures arrived at?

    CATEGORY GLOBAL HECTARES

    FOOD 4.2

    MOBILITY 0.4

    SHELTER 1.1

    GOODS/SERVICES 1.5

    TOTAL FOOTPRINT 7.2

There is so much scaremongering going on these days, I’m surprised the earth hasn’t tilted off it’s axis and everything destroyed. With global warming destroying glaciers…oh wait some glaciers are increasing in size; with temperatures actually falling within the norm over long periods of time;with the world actually behaving like it always has;…we’re doomed.

  8. You’re telling me. Of course chocolate ice cream falls into the major food group because of it’s anti-oxidant qualities. I am such a good nutritionist. :>)

  9. I don’t own a car, but I do use the co-op car quite often. I could be more local in my eating habits and shopping(the survey didn’t seem to factor in goods very well, IMO.)

  10. Here’s mine –

    CATEGORY GLOBAL HECTARES

Of course, I live in student housing in the Netherlands and take my bike everywhere – once I graduate, and move back to Canada, I can see my footprint getting much larger…
