Poet WH Auden wrote in 1945 the following:
“Christianity is a way, not a state, and a Christian is never something one is, only some thing one can pray to become..”

they can NOT be a Christian if they do not believe that Jesus is the Christ.
Auden holds out a definition of “Christian” that is an ideal. If seeking to be Christlike is the essence of true Christianity, and no one succeeds in being absolutely Christlike in this life, then in that sense, Christianity is a thing we seek for but don’t fully reach.
Similar to perfection perhaps. I can’t imagine one day being perfect, as we define it. I imagine it is always a state that can be added upon. Perhaps, like being Christian. There will always be room for improvement.
