US Senators were chosen by state legislatures until the US Constitution was amended in 1913; now they’re popularly elected.
In my view it was a mistake. The Congress had been crafted with one house that concerned itself with the direct interests of the populace (the House of Representatives) and another that concerned itself with the interests of the State governments (the Senate). Now the state governments–the source of sovereign power ceded to a central government by the Constitution–have no one representing them.
