President Hinckley issued a challenge to the world in the August issue of the Ensign and through a letter to all wards and stakes. His challenge was for everyone to read or reread the Book of Mormon.
I offer a challenge to members of the Church throughout the world and to our friends everywhere to read or reread the Book of Mormon.
Nowhere in this sentence does he give timeframe or suggest that the challenge consist of reading a specific amount each day. Later on in his message, does point out the following:
If you will read a bit more than one and one-half chapters a day, you will be able to finish the book before the end of this year.
It is not clear, however, that this information is strictly part of the challenge or simply FYI.
So, strictly speaking, I guess I am meeting President Hinckley’s challenge after all. Nevertheless, I didn’t stop reading the Book of Mormon and start over; I simply kept going where I was already.
Interesting. I’m going to have to take a look at the announcement that was read over the pulpit to see if it was the same wording. It’s interesting how we sometimes hear what we want to hear.
Either way, Kim, I think you’re fine doing what you’re doing. This seems to be more of a call to action to those who haven’t been taking their study seriously or haven’t read the BoM in a while.
“I think you’re fine doing what you’re doing.”
I wasn’t worried that it wasn’t fine. ;)
Rusty,
That’s my thought too, about the challenge to be a call of action for those who haven’t been taking their study seriously. I decided to do the challenge myself just to increase my own reading (which I was doing, just not as much as I really wanted to do). I do find it has helped increase my patience and spirituality.
My wife and I have been reading the Book of Mormon together. Rather than start over in our reading as a couple we have simply doubled our efforts from a single chapter to two chapters a day. We just began Alma today. Those friggin’ Amlicites.]
By the way, I’ve started to move away from just artwork and am beginning to post written content. I hope you’ll drop in occasionally. I’ve also decided it’s time to redo the sidebar and just added ‘Our Thoughts’ to the list.
Looking at your blog, I think I need to get a gravatar.
Welcome back, danithew. And thanks for the link.
Okay, so I didn’t portray your Book of Mormon manifesto correctly, mea culpa. My website is now updated for accuracy with regards to your good name.
I’m using it as an excuse for family reading. `
No problem. Link to me however you want. I’m still not trying to finish it by the end of the year.
