I think true misery is fully self-absorbed, and selfishness is the key to being devilish. Satan is all about him – his power, his glory, his angish, his loss, the divine “injustice” to him, etc., and with such perfect self-absorption, there is misery that seeks to crush all others with equal misery. Happiness in others is the ultimate wrong that must be suppressed. Others can be tortured with glee in this mindset. And i think I see such expressions among the living.
