Marriage can teach unselfishness, the ability to compromise, the value of commitment even after the beauty fades due to illness, accident or age. Marriage can test our willingness to keep temple commandments, even when other alternatives seem more attractive. Marriage can teach us about a love even more beautiful than romantic love, the pure love of Christ in which we seek not satisfy our own desires through another but to satisfy their needs and desires, even without hope of recompense. In short marriage provides an opportunity to develope the characteristics we will need for exaltation.
